Scripture Anchor:
“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.”Psalm 62:8 KJV
Apostolic Insight:
God cannot be shocked by your emotional displays. He already knows who you are.
Some believers are remarkably honest with everyone except God. Though they speak Christianese, they edit their prayers. But Scripture says: “Pour out your heart before him.”
Pouring is not neat. David’s prayers certainly were not always neat. The Psalms contain fear, frustration, grief, confusion, anger, hope, praise, questions, and confidence, sometimes within the same Psalm.
God already knows what is in our hearts. Prayer gives us a safe place to bring the complexities of life before Him.
You can tell God:
I need you. I hurt, heal me. I am disappointed, help me get past it. I don’t understand what is happening, I need clarity. I am angry, help me. This situation is scary, I need you. I expected a different result, this is disappointing.
Honesty before God is not unbelief. It becomes dangerous only when we make our feelings the final authority. We pour them out and then allow the truth to speak.
Prayer is not pretending the emotion does not exist. It is bringing the emotion into the presence of the Greater-One.
Ponder This:
Is there something I have been feeling that I have not honestly brought before God?
Declaration:
I will be honest in the presence of God.
My emotions do not govern my faith or determine truth.
Prayer of Agreement:
Father, You know everything within me. Teach me to come before You without pretense. I pour out disappointment, frustration, fear, grief, confusion, and weariness wherever they exist, and receive Your truth.
Correct distorted thoughts. Heal wounded places. Restore perspective. And let what I feel be brought under the government of what You have spoken. In the matchless name of Jesus Christ, Amein.
Shalom,
